New Research Exposes Dangerous Headlight Glare Problem in Popular Truck Models

A comprehensive study by an eyewear company has uncovered a troubling reality for pickup truck shoppers: many of the best-selling models on the market produce dangerously high levels of headlight glare, even though they remain fully legal under current federal standards. The research analyzed headlight performance data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) across 257 vehicle models, creating an index that accounts for both raw glare output and vehicle height, since taller trucks position their headlights closer to other drivers’ eye level.

The Nissan Titan emerged as the worst performer in the study. The current generation (2017-2024) Titan produces headlight glare measuring 615% above what the IIHS considers safe. Among the 16 different headlight variations tested on Titans throughout this generation’s production run, every single configuration exceeded safe limits by a dramatic margin. This isn’t a minor violation or edge-case failure: it represents one of the most significant departures from safe lighting standards in the entire vehicle market.

When researchers factored vehicle height into their analysis, a clear pattern emerged. The pickup truck segment filled the top positions on the list. Behind the Titan came the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in second place and the Ram 1500 in third. The GMC Sierra 1500 landed in fifth position. This concentration of truck models reflects a structural challenge in the truck segment: the higher seating position and hood height of pickup trucks place their headlights directly in the sightline of drivers in lower-riding passenger vehicles and sedans.

Interestingly, the Ford F-150, America’s best-selling truck, ranked 10th overall with a notably lower glare index than several crossovers, suggesting that not all large trucks struggle equally with this issue. As new pickup truck concepts emerge in the market, headlight technology will likely become an increasingly important evaluation point for informed buyers.

The Regulatory Gap That Allows This Problem to Persist

One critical point cannot be overlooked: every vehicle in this study meets current federal headlight standards. Buyers cannot purchase a truck that violates U.S. regulations, which means the government’s safety threshold itself may be inadequate. The IIHS testing shows that federal rules fail to address headlight glare effectively and don’t ensure sufficient nighttime illumination across all driving conditions.

Why hasn’t the industry acted voluntarily? Automakers face no legal pressure to reduce glare beyond the federal minimum, and the current regulatory framework actually restricts manufacturers’ ability to implement newer lighting technologies that might improve visibility without creating glare. This creates a perverse incentive where staying compliant with minimal standards becomes the business norm.

Consumer surveys show that roughly six in 10 U.S. drivers recognize headlight glare as a meaningful problem when driving at night, and about 75% report that the issue has worsened over the past decade. This isn’t just an annoyance: excessive glare reduces visibility, causes eye strain, and can impair the ability to see the road ahead when driving into bright oncoming headlights.

When shopping for a pickup truck, especially newer models with LED or adaptive headlight systems, it makes sense to test drive vehicles during evening hours.
