Walmart’s Fast-Charging Expansion Reaches Major Milestone
Walmart has officially opened its 100th company-owned ultra-fast electric vehicle charging site, marking a significant expansion of its nationwide charging network. The milestone location is a Supercenter in Monument, Colorado, featuring eight charging plugs capable of delivering up to 400 kilowatts of power. This achievement represents rapid growth across 20 states and signals that convenient EV charging is becoming more accessible to American shoppers.
The Monument, Colorado station includes four CCS1 plugs and four NACS connectors, reflecting Walmart’s commitment to supporting the diversity of charging standards currently in use across the EV market. While the hardware can technically deliver 400 kW, most electric vehicles on the road today cannot yet accept such extreme power levels, though future models will likely take full advantage of this capability.
What Makes These Chargers Different

Walmart is deploying industry-leading equipment from Swiss manufacturer ABB E-mobility and Italian charger maker Alpitronic. The specific models include ABB’s A400 All-in-One and Alpitronic’s HYC400 Hypercharger. These aren’t ordinary chargers. The ABB A400 can simultaneously provide 200 kW to two vehicles or direct the full 400 kW to a single EV, dramatically speeding up recharge times.
Real-world testing demonstrates the practical value of this technology. In one documented test at an early Walmart site in McKinney, Texas, a GMC Hummer EV pulled over 300 kW and recharged from 1 percent to 53 percent battery capacity in just 27 minutes. For comparison, traditional Level 2 chargers take hours to achieve similar results.
Most Walmart charging locations feature eight to 16 plugs divided between the two connector standards, giving flexibility to drivers regardless of their vehicle type. This approach ensures that early EV adopters with CCS infrastructure can charge alongside newer owners of NACS-equipped vehicles.
Software That Simplifies the Experience
The technical backbone of Walmart’s network was built entirely in-house by Walmart Global Tech. Rather than forcing customers to download yet another standalone app, the company integrated charging functionality directly into the regular Walmart mobile application. This means drivers can locate available chargers, initiate a charging session, monitor progress, and process payments all from a single familiar platform.
The software also handles the complex backend work: connecting chargers, collecting real-time availability and performance data, processing transactions, and syncing station information with major mapping and charging discovery apps including Apple Maps, Google Maps, PlugShare, ChargeHub, and Chargeway. This integration makes Walmart charging stations discoverable across the entire EV ecosystem, not just within Walmart’s own app.
Walmart+ membership subscribers receive discounted rates on charging sessions, adding another incentive for existing customers to charge at Walmart locations. The company has indicated that expanded payment options will roll out as the network grows, addressing a critical pain point for drivers who prefer simple credit card transactions without requiring app registration.
The Bigger Picture for EV Owners

Walmart’s expansion comes at a crucial moment for EV adoption. The company initially committed to installing chargers at thousands of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations by 2030. With more than 5,200 U.S. stores and approximately 90 percent of Americans living within 10 miles of a Walmart location, the company possesses unmatched real estate advantages compared to other charging networks. This geographic density could position Walmart as one of America’s largest fast-charging operators within the next few years.
The competitive pressure for convenient charging infrastructure continues to intensify across the industry. Just as European gas stations are transforming into supercharger hubs, U.S. retailers are recognizing that EV charging stations drive traffic and boost customer loyalty. Walmart’s approach integrates charging seamlessly into the shopping experience, allowing families to grab groceries, run errands, and charge their vehicles simultaneously.
What This Means for Your Next Road Trip
For practical shoppers evaluating EV purchases or planning long-distance travels, the expanding Walmart charging network reduces range anxiety significantly. A 400 kW charger can add 200 miles of range to many modern EVs in under 30 minutes, making cross-country trips feasible without excessive waiting time.
The reliability and user-friendly design represent important improvements over earlier charging networks. Walmart’s stated goal is straightforward: “When a customer pulls into a Walmart to charge, we want the experience to feel as reliable and effortless as the rest of their shopping trip.” This customer-centric philosophy reflects lessons learned from other industries and prioritizes the total experience rather than just raw power delivery.
As charging infrastructure continues expanding nationwide, the accessibility of ultra-fast chargers at convenient retail locations will likely accelerate EV adoption among mainstream consumers. Walmart’s 100-site milestone demonstrates that building nationwide charging coverage is both feasible and commercially viable for major retailers.
